Buying A Fast Steering Mirror? Extra Parts You May Need

Fast steering mirrors are pieces of technology meant to alter the course of lasers, directional beams, and digital information beams. It is uncommon for most people to buy a fast steering mirror, but if you have need of one, you can order them online. Likewise, if you are going to buy such a mirror, you will need to buy several extra components to go with it.

Fast Steering Mirror Controller

Fast steering mirrors do not steer themselves! You will definitely need a controller and a power source for the controller. Controllers typically operate on either digital or analog signals to the mirror. Be sure to buy the correct type of controller for the mirror you are purchasing.

Stabilizer

These mirrors are very sensitive to vibrations. The tapping of fingers, the stomp of a heavy step, a major breeze, a minor earthquake; all of these can affect what you are attempting to do with the mirror. For that reason, be sure to purchase a stabilizer for your mirror.

Substrate

Different substrates have different effects on your mirror. If what you are trying to project or bounce off the mirror reacts to highly reflective surfaces nearby, you are going to want a substrate material that does not reflect and/or reduces the amount of environmental light that hits the substrate or the mirror. Discuss with the mirror production company your plans for your mirror so that they can offer you a substrate material and base that will work well with your intended use.

Base/Mount

Most fast steering mirrors already come with a mount or a base so that you can secure it all properly. If you need a very different sort of base or mount, you can request a custom base/mount. You may need to send the company your specs and design for said base/mount, but these companies are usually very accommodating.

Extra Replacement Mirrors

The thing about fast steering mirrors is that they are every bit as delicate as any other mirror. Their surfaces can be scratched or etched, and they can crack or break if dropped. It is highly recommended that you order more than one when you place your order, just in case the first mirror is accidentally damaged. (That includes scratches, considering that a scratch can alter the beam or frequency by making the beam/frequency travel the "trench" of the scratch rather than bounce off or reflect off the mirror.)
